A HEAD teacher has said she fears one of her pupils will be killed by careless parents who double park outside her school.

Margaret Gordon said she has been battling against bad drivers since taking over at Notre Dame Primary School 14 years ago.

Despite tireless campaigning, parents are still insisting on double parking and abusing zig zag lines on busy Havelock Street in Partick.

Mrs Gordon said: “We have persistent traffic issues around the school.

“Parents double park on Havelock Street, making it very dangerous for our pupils trying to cross the road into school.

“It’s been going on for years. We moved to this site three years ago and hoped we would leave our traffic problems behind us but things are no better.

“A small group of parents insist on making things dangerous for our children in order to make drop off and pick up easier for themselves.

“I don’t want to see the day where we lose a child - but that is what I fear will happen.”

In a bid to yet again highlight the problem, Notre Dame teamed up with the Child Brain Injury Trust and held a demonstration on Havelock Street.

Youngsters worse bright colours and held up banners reading Keep Us Safe.

Notre Dame Primary merged with St Peter’s Primary in 2013 in the former Dowanhill Primary, which underwent a £15million upgrade.

The busy west end location has ample transport links but Mrs Gordon says parents insist on driving rather than walking or taking public transport.

She said some of the worst offenders are those who live in the catchment area and have no excuses.

One mum, who asked not to named, said things will not change until parents are forced to pay up for their poor parking.

The mum, whose son is in primary three, said she had very narrowly avoided being hit by a careless driver.

She said: “It is horrendous every day at that school.

“The headteacher has been campaigning and trying to persuade drivers to be more careful but nothing changes. I live outside the catchment area and I know it is busy so I take the bus.

“There’s no excuse when we have so much public transport in the area.

“We need a traffic warden to be there at 3pm to ticket cars that are double parked. Nothing will change until these people are hit in the pocket.”

Mrs Gordon added: “I regularly park away from the school and walk up to 20 minutes to get here, as do other teachers.

“We try to set a good example but nothing impacts the problem.

“We are a busy school with 480 pupils and I dread the day one of them is hurt.”
