AN ATTEMPTED murder probe has been launched after two cops were hit with a car in Knightswood while they were on duty conducting enquiries.

The incident happened in Banner Drive at 11.15pm where the officers were responding to a call.

Police Scotland said in conducting their enquiries at the location, officers stopped a car to speak to the occupants when the car reversed and struck both cops, leaving them seriously injured.

Emergency services responded to the incident and both officers were taken to hospital.

The female officer, aged 30, suffered serious injuries and is currently in an Intensive Care Unit.

The other officer, aged 31, was also seriously injured, however, he was released from hospital on Monday afternoon.

Extensive enquiries are underway with detectives conducting door-to-door enquiries and checking CCTV footage for additional detail.

The incident is being treated as attempted murder.

Detective Inspector Ian Hylands, said: “Our enquiries so far have revealed that a blue Nissan Qashqai was seen at the location around the time of the incident.

"A vehicle matching that description has been found badly damaged by fire in Lennox Gardens, Scotstoun.

"However we have yet to confirm if that is the same vehicle.  Despite the damage, forensic officers will carry out a comprehensive examination of the car.

"Everything that can be done to locate the suspects is being done but I would like to appeal to anyone who may have seen the incident last night or who has any knowledge of the vehicle or the suspects to contact us.

"Two police officers, in responding to an incident to help protect the public, have been badly injured.  Help us find those responsible.”

Brian Docherty, Chairman of the Scottish Police Federation said: "Our colleagues were simply doing their damnedest to keep the public safe and faced an unconscionable attack on their lives as a consequence.

"This is a despicable and cowardly act and there can be no doubt that those who drove a vehicle at police officers did so with the intention of taking their life.

"Day and daily police officers put themselves in harm’s way so others don't have to but we should never come to accept that violence is an occupational hazard.

"The SPF is fully supporting the officers, their families and friends at this incredibly difficult time and we will be raising with the Police Service of Scotland why almost 12 hours had passed before we were made aware of this horrific incident.

"We will also be asking why the power of traditional and social media was not immediately deployed to help trace these criminals. The Police Service of Scotland social media accounts are amongst the most followed in the country and could have alerted 1000s to the fact dangerous criminals were being sought."

Police officers were still at the scene on Monday investigating the attempted murder of two colleagues.

Officers placed a cordon at the entrance to Banner Drive while the scratched police car was eventually removed on Monday afternoon.

Local residents were left shocked that something like this could happen in the area.

Thomas Phillips, 84, who lives nearby, said: "I was watching TV when I heard a lot of sirens coming towards the street."

A spokesman for the Scottish Police Federation said: "Our thoughts and concerns go out to each of the officers involved, their families, colleagues and friends.

"The circumstances are being investigated as we speak. What I can say is that is that our colleagues were simply doing their best to attend a call in order to keep the public safe.

"They were subsequently injured as a deliberate result of the actions of a driver of the vehicle.

"This is a despicable and cowardly act. The vehicle was driven at the police officers with a clear intention of injuring them or taking their lives.

"It should never be accepted that police officers should face this level of violence and it is not an occupational hazard.

"We will fully support the officers and their families at this incredibly difficult time.

"Hopefully, we will be in a position to say more once the perpetrator has been apprehended.

"In due course we hope that the courts will sentence the individual or individuals severely to send out a message that society will not put up with this."

At the scene where the attacker burned their car in the Lennox Gardens area of Glasgow, residents reported hearing explosions.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said he could hear the noise from the rear of his house, which faces out on to the area where the car was burned.

He said: "At first I heard this constant, loud sound, that was probably the car horn. They couldn't have been just pressing it as it never stopped.

"I looked out the back and saw this really big blaze and that was when I noticed it was a car.

"All of a sudden, there small explosions starting to happen. That may have been the tank going off, it was really scary.

"This all happened nearer midnight so it couldn't have been long after the police officers were attacked.

"It wasn't long before police and fire engines were here, and there was a lot of them."
