IT has been another stellar year for sport in Glasgow.

And now it is time to formally recognise the achievements of the city - and everyone who makes our sporting achievements happen.

Today the nominations open for Glasgow Life’s Sports Person of the Year Awards 2016.

Categories range from the Lifetime Achievement to Glasgow Club of the Year and Coach of the Year.

This year the Evening Times will again sponsor four awards - Evening Times Glasgow Disabled Athlete of the Year Award, Evening Times Glasgow Young Sportsperson of the Year Award, Evening Times Glasgow Volunteer of the Year and Evening Times Glasgow Young Volunteer of the Year.

Archie Graham, Depute Leader of Glasgow City Council and chairman of Glasgow Life, said: “This year has been yet another remarkable year in our proud sporting journey and Glasgow shone on the global stage with high-profile events such as the Homeless World Cup, Tour of Britain Grand Depart and the European Judo Open all taking place in our city.

“Our Sports Person of the Year Awards is one of my favourite annual events in the Glasgow calendar.

“We applaud sport involvement and achievement at every level – from grassroots to the greatest sporting performances of the year.”

Glasgow has had another year to be proud of in 2016 as we played host to a wide array of events.

These included Glasgow Indoor Grand Prix, Glasgow World Cup Gymnastics, the Homeless World Cup, Tour of Britain Grand Depart, the Davis Cup and the European Judo Open.

The 2016 sporting calendar isn’t over yet either - from November 4 to 6 Glasgow will welcome the UCI Track Cycling World Cup and then the Scottish Open Badminton Grand Prix from November 23 to 27.

Sports participation levels across the city continued to grow in 2015-16 with attendances at sports development programmes currently standing at 817,750 - up 12 per cent from 731,138 last year.

Among the many successes recorded during the year was the Schools’ Rugby Programme, which delivered 1,102 sessions in 85 primary and secondary schools.

Attendances at these sessions hit 21,481.

The awards recognise the excellence and achievements of Glasgow and Scotland’s sporting heroes. There are 13 categories to nominate favourites in.
