It’s a bittersweet final for Bake Off 2016 as viewers’ excitement is mingled with mourning for the last ever series with the nation’s favourite culinary auntie, Mary Berry.
It has been an impressive seventh series of biscuit pubs, meringue menageries and even a dessert-based theme park ride, but it will be the last one we ever see on the BBC.
When the show moves to Channel 4 next year, there will be no more Mary, Mel or Sue – and die-hard fans are already sorely missing the original crew…
Can't believe tonight is the last ever bake off with Mary Berry 😓 pic.twitter.com/mQmI1rjy7e

Buzzing for the final of #gbbo tonight but gutted it's the last episode with the legend that is Mary Berry! 😭

Truly sad tonight is the final episode of the #GBBO as we know it. It won’t be the same without Mel & @sueperkins
or the lovely Mary Berry.— Craig Davidson (@JustCraigy) October 26, 2016
While, for most of us, a simple broken heart puts it best…
this will be mary berry's last bake off tonight

…for others it actually feels like saying goodbye to a member of the family.
#GBBOFinal Tonight! 🤗 My final Wednesday evening with Mary Berry. 😭

After all, she’s taught us so much about cakery and bakery over the years.
Just made a lemon cake out of pure boredom. I feel like mary berry pic.twitter.com/8Ovne5mBLS

Some are sort of trying to stay positive…
Cheer up, it's not over. It just won't be on BBC. Sure, there'll be adverts…and no Mel and Sue…no Mary Berry – no, I'm crying #GBBOFinal
— selkie (@wutheringselkie) October 26, 2016
…but it’s tough when we’re pretty sure Mary must be feeling it too.
Last #gbbo #GBBOFinal. No more Mel and Sue, no more Mary Berry and no more bake offs on the @BBC #saddays 😞😫 pic.twitter.com/QqgqaTMTfM

But sad thoughts for the future still didn’t stop people getting excited for the final. In some cases, perhaps a little TOO excited…
#GBBOFinal @BBCOne #MelandSue #MaryBerry @PaulHollywood I'm fit to burst for the final tonight, I think I may have a #soggybottom already!

While others just hoped Mary would mark the occasion with a special exit piece…
Mary berry should drop a mic tonight and be like "Berry out" #GBBOFinal

#GBBOFinal I'm hoping for a #WalkingDead crossover where Mary Berry finally cracks and destroys a cake with a baseball bat.

Oh Mary, we will miss you so!
