A CONSULTATION on a new school for Maryhill will go ahead.

Members of an executive committee of Glasgow City Council voted to approve a scheme to consult residents and local communities over the future of primary school education in the area.

It will specifically look at opening a new school at a site at Kelvinside Avenue and former North Kelvinside Secondary School.

A number of pre-engagement sessions with the residents and local councillors have already taken place ahead of the formal consultation process.

It comes after Glasgow City Council closed Wyndford and St Gregory's primaries in 2009 due to them being under capacity.

Liz Cameron, Executive Member for Children, Young People and Lifelong Learning, said: “It’s crucial that we engage with everyone in the area so that we can plan for our children’s future education needs.

“We are intent on public consultation in the area because we need to get this right for the medium and long term education of all our children.

“It’s wonderful to be witnessing the resurgence and regeneration of Maryhill and as a result the need for additional primary school places.

“Our officers have undertaken a demographic study which has been included in the formal public consultation for everyone to have a look at.

“The recommendation in the report would meet both the educational and community needs of the local communities with plans for community sports facilities at the proposed new school, although we would also welcome other ideas.

“The public information meetings a couple of weeks ago were held to answer any queries that local residents and families might have ahead of the consultation.

“Now, I would urge everyone with a view on a new, non-denominational primary school to make sure they make their views known as part of the formal consultation.”
