A TEENAGE girl at one of Scotland's top performing schools was rushed to hospital after a suspected drugs overdose.

The 13-year-old became ill during classes at Williamwood High School before being taken to Hairmyres Hospital, in East Kilbride.

Following the incident, on Wednesday morning, the girl was held by medical staff for observation and has since been discharged.

An East Renfrewshire Council spokesman said: “A pupil became unwell at Williamwood High School on Wednesday morning and was taken to hospital for observation.

"The pupil was later discharged.

“We are working with Police Scotland as they investigate the circumstances of this incident.

“Drugs have no place in our schools and whilst incidents such as this are extremely rare they are however taken very seriously.

“Our teachers work hard alongside our on-site Campus Cops to ensure that pupils are educated on the dangers associated with substance misuse.”

Williamwood is consistently one of the most high-performing schools in Scotland with parents paying a premium on housing in the catchment area to secure their child a place.

Chief inspector Angela Carty, area commander for East Renfrewshire, said: "The impact of taking any substance you do not know the exact content of is extremely dangerous.

"We are continuing to work with our partners in relation to this incident and our enquiries are ongoing."
