YOUNGSTERS from a Glasgow primary have become the faces of a £250million campaign to transform their local area.

Children from St Stephen’s Primary in Sighthill are featured on signs around the 50 hectare site earmarked for the mammoth project, which is the biggest of its kind in the UK.

Over the next few years a new neighbourhood will take shape with around 800 new homes for sale and rent, a new community school campus and footbridge across the M8 creating a ‘street in the sky’ to connect Sighthill with the city centre.

There will also be improved parkland, allotments and public spaces.

In January, the then Primary 5/6 children from St Stephen’s in collaboration with the Ibrox Study Centre, were given the opportunity to make a short film about a topic of their choice.

They came up with an idea about the regeneration taking place in Sighthill and its impact on local lives through the eyes of children.

Through the film project, youngsters have had the opportunity to learn about a range of skills including, acting, script writing, camera technique and film production, culminating in two short dramas, which will be screened at their school over the next few weeks.

A school spokesman said: “In order to develop their understanding and awareness of the changes taking place in their local community, the children also contacted the various agencies involved in the regeneration.

“They successfully organised and hosted a question and answer session at the school, which they enjoyed and a short excerpt is included in their film. These links with the various organisations and the pupils of St Stephen’s are ongoing and will hopefully enable the children to continue to engage and keep up to date with the changes in their local community.”

The standing stones of Sighthill Park – known as the Sighthill Megalith – are being removed temporarily  with the stones to be stored and eventually housed in a new resting place.

The regeneration of Sighthill is being delivered by Transforming Communities: Glasgow, a partnership between Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Housing Association and the Scottish Government.
