WORK will start next year on £6million of improvements to Tollcross International Swimming Centre.

Members of the city council's executive committee are expected to approve the upgrade when they meet this week.

It will involve replacing the roof, new mechanical and electrical equipment as well as internal fabric and structural repairs.

The carbon footprint of the swim centre will improve as more efficient systems will be installed and the work will extend the life of the property.

Tollcross, which opened in 1997, is one of Glasgow Club's most popular leisure facilities, offering an array of health and fitness facilities.

It was a venue for the Commonwealth Games and has hosted some of the world's most prestigious events including the 2013 Speedo Duel in the Pool and the 2015 IPC Swimming World Championships.

It will also be the venue for the swimming events taking place during the first Glasgow European Championships in 2018.

Glasgow Life chairman Archie Graham said: "Tollcross International Swimming Centre is a venue of which Glaswegians should be proud and these improvement works will allow Tollcross to uphold its reputation as a world-class facility.

"The investment will have a positive impact in both the local and the national level.

"By carrying out these works now, we are ensuring the venue will continue to be enjoyed by the local community in decades to come as well as supporting local and national economies by continuing to attract high profile national and international events."

A previous £14m extension to the building was completed in May 2013 following 19 months of building work carried out in advance of the Commonwealth Games.

It added a new 50metre warm-up pool and a new community wing to replace the fire damaged Shettleston Burgh Halls.

The swim centre now includes a 10 lane, 50 metre competition pool, a six lane 50metre warm-up pool and 2000 permanent seats.

Tollcross International Swimming Centre is a training centre for all levels of swimming and is home to the City of Glasgow Swim Team..

Glasgow Life is to publish a full programme of works in the New Year to keep customers informed of the proposed timescale of the upgrade.
