A MUM who went on the school run while six times over the drink-drive limit has been branded “despicable” in court.

Carrie Duffy went to collect her two-year-old son, with her five-year-old daughter already in the car, on March 30, 2016.

Staff at the son’s nursery in Govan however, smelled booze when the 38-year-old came in and contacted the police after she drove away.

According to reports from nursery staff, Duffy was “smelling strongly of alcohol” when she arrived around 3.20pm.

The Procurator Fiscal Depute told Sheriff Wood during sentencing at Glasgow sheriff court that nursery witnesses described Duffy as being “very jovial and almost over-friendly”.

The court was told staff member “observed the accused pick up her two-year-old child, put him in the vehicle and drive off”.

When police visited Duffy’s home, at Hillbrae Street in Shieldhall, they touched the tyres on the car and found they were warm, “indicating the vehicle has recently been driven”, a court heard.

The mum confirmed she had only been in the house for 10 minutes when they arrived.

Officers took two breathalyser samples from the 38-year-old – the first reading 100mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.

A second sample taken at Govan police station was 118mg – six times over the legal limit of 22mg. She was then cautioned and charged, but made no reply at that point.

As the details were read out in court, Duffy sat in tears in the dock.

Her lawyer said said: “My client’s position is that “she had been drinking the night before and then went to pick up her children from primary and nursery”.

Sheriff Wood replied: Who does she think she’s kidding? This was three in the afternoon. She was six times over the limit.”

Her lawyer continued: “She is in complete denial. She doesn’t think she has an alcohol problem.

“She is living a normal life. She looks after her family and holds down a good job.

“There was some investigation by social work to getting some assistance for alcohol, but that all seems to have hit the buffers.”

Sheriff Wood told Duffy: “What you did was despicable.

“Driving with two kids in the car, you could have killed people, including your children and yourself.

“You were a danger on the roads.”

He continued: “I see that you are in denial and it would be better for you to come out of that situation. You are just stirring up trouble for yourself.

“You are clearly an intelligent woman.”

Duffy was ordered to do 80 hours of unpaid work within six months, and must have supervision for a year along with alcohol counselling.

She has also been banned from driving for two years.
