RANGERS moved up to second place in the Premiership standings as they came from behind to beat Partick Thistle at Firhill.

Kris Doolan put Alan Archibald’s side ahead on derby day in Glasgow but a double from Joe Dodoo clinched a crucial win for the Light Blues.

Rangers are now two points clear of Aberdeen and will make the trip to Tynecastle on Wednesday night aiming to strengthen their hold on the best of the rest spot in the top flight.

Boss Mark Warburton made two changes from the side that left it late against Dundee last weekend as Danny Wilson and goal hero Harry Forrester returned to the starting line-up.

It was Wilson’s first outing since the win over the Jags at Ibrox, while Forrester replaced Michael O’Halloran as he was given a chance to impress from the off.

Thistle equipped themselves well when they made the trip across Glasgow a few weeks ago as quickfire goals from Niko Kranjcar and Andy Halliday clinched the points for the Gers.

It was a bright start once again from Archibald’s side and David Amoo was first to get a shot on target as Wes Foderingham saved a low effort before Chris Erskine’s follow up was blocked.

Rangers’ insistence on playing the ball out from the back began to frustrate the travelling support as the Light Blues struggled to get going.

But Jags keeper Thorsten Stuckmann had to be alert stop a Kenny Miller header before a Lee Wallace cross was diverted towards goal by Ziggy Gordon.

There was little between the sides in a scrappy affair and Thistle carved out another chance as Foderingham held a Kris Doolan effort after he found himself in space inside the area.

The Jags were more than in the game as Rangers continued to look toothless in attack. Their best move of the half saw Wallace and Miller combine down the left but Liam Lindsay denied Joe Garner with a terrific block.

It was no surprise that the first half ended goalless but Rangers could have been ahead just seconds after the restart.

Boss Warburton made a switch at the break as Barrie McKay replaced Windass and his side would start positively as they went in search of a breakthrough.

Referee Nick Walsh waved away a penalty claim from Forrester after Abdul Osman challenged him at the end of a direct run into the Jags area.

From the following corner, Miller ballooned an effort high over the bar and just seconds later Garner’s shot was just the wrong side of the near post.

Having survived a couple of scares, Thistle had two chances of their own as Foderingham made quickfire low saves from Christie Elliott and Chris Erskine.

The game was already beginning to open up and Miller fired another strike over the bar before Garner made way for Dodoo and Stuckmann denied Forrester.

The former Leicester City kid was denied by the Firhill shot-stopper but he should have done better in plenty of time and space on the edge of the box.

It was Rangers who were controlling the game now but the opening goal still eluded them, a Wallace strike deflecting off Holt summing up the Light Blues’ frustrations.

Archibald turned to his bench as Ryan Edwards replaced Erskine and there was another smattering of boos when Warburton made his final switch as Forrester was replaced by O’Halloran.

Within seconds, the frustration grew further in the Gers ranks as Thistle took the lead. It was a scrappy goal as Rangers failed to clear their lines but Doolan’s determination paid off as he bundled the ball in at the front post from a Stevie Lawless cross.

The Jags had victory in their sights and Edwards almost sparked more celebrations at Firhill as his long-range effort hit the bar. Time was against Rangers now.

Warburton needed a moment of magic and it was Dodoo who delivered. Miller received the ball on the edge of the box and scooped it wide.

After spurning his last chance, Dodoo made no mistake this time around and he left Stuckmann helpless with a terrific first time strike into the far corner.

And with just seconds to spare the striker was the Light Blue hero as he doubled his tally for the afternoon.

This one wasn’t as spectacular but it was crucial for the Gers as he curled the ball into the bottom corner to send Warburton’s side up to second spot.
