THE UK Government must not break a promise to Clyde shipyard workers, a city MSP has warned.

Anniesland SNP MSP Bill Kid has written to the Defence Secretary Michael Fallon looking for an assurance over jobs at the BAE yards.

His concerns come after a report called for six other yards across the UK to be part of the country’s naval shipbuilding capacity.

The Clyde yards have been promised the work on the Type 26 Frigates securing the yards’ future for decades.

However the deal has not yet been finalised, which Mr Kidd says leaves the yards in an uncertain position.

He said the workers were promised job security by the UK government and that is what they expect to happen.

Mr Kidd said: “The continued uncertainty coming from the Tory government is absolutely outrageous and undermines the promises made to those that work on the Clyde’s shipyards.

“The Tories have continually gone back on pledges to support our shipyard workers first promising that there would be 13 new ships, before cutting back to eight.

“Now we see that they are talking about moving future contracts away from the Clyde altogether despite being quick to make promises on protecting Scotland’s shipyards in the past.

“The Tories must not break their promise to Clyde shipbuilders, and Michael Fallon must urgently provide clarity to those workers who have already been told that their jobs are safe.”

In his letter he asks for clarity over the continued existence of the projects on the Clyde which he says are vital for jobs and the local economy.

Mr Kidd added: “It is imperative you are able to offer certainty for those workers who have questions over the short and long-term existence of their jobs following the latest news stories.”
