BRAEHEAD CLAN have raised over £4000 for Glasgow’s Children Hospital thanks to a unique strip auction.

During the Elite Ice Hockey League’s match on Saturday night with Dundee Stars, the home side ditched their traditional uniform of black and purple for a special one off furry brown number.

Inspired by the side’s highland cow mascot Clangus, a firm favourite with all the younger members of the Purple Army, the get up was covered from the jersey all the way down to the socks in the chocolate brown print.

The outfits were designed by the team strip manufacturer Warrior and went under the hammer immediately after the game at the Braehead Arena.

A furious frenzy had supporters clamouring for the latest special edition kit – they have previous worn a full tartan kilt outfit as well as special Halloween jerseys – with the final total topping £4000.

Gareth Chalmers, Clan hockey and operations director, told the Evening Times: “It is something we have been thinking about for a while.

“All the kids that come to Clan games absolutely love Clangus and we felt having the guys dress up like him was the perfect way to raise money for a great cause.

“We even had cow horn stickers for their helmets. Once we told them what it was for the guys were happy to join in.

“We’d also like to thank the fans that bid so generously for all the jerseys.”

A Clan statement added: The Braehead Clan, Glasgow’s professional ice hockey team, took to the ice against the Dundee Stars on Saturday in our special edition jerseys in homage to the club’s superb mascot, Clangus – a Highland Cow.

The jersey, short shells and socks were commissioned in association with our partners at Warrior, to raise money for the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity.

Following the game a charity auction was held where the superb Clan fans raised over £4000 for the charity.

We’d like to thank everyone who bid for a jersey and raised a fantastic amount of money for the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity.

A message from the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity said: “A huge thank you to the Braehead Clan and it’s legendary Purple Army fans for raising over £4000 with these one-off Clangus jerseys!”

In 2015, the hospital moved from its home at Yorkhill to a brand new children’s hospital - the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow.

Over 160,000 babies, children and young people walk through its doors each year to be treated by its staff and the charity is there to help receive the best possible care.

Funds raised go towards improved equipment, play programmes for patients to help provide relief from their treatments, support services for families as well as give much-needed cash towards medical research to help children of Glasgow’s future.

Braehead Clan lost the game 6-4.
