Rangers have confirmed they sacked a youth scout after a boy made abuse allegations against him in the early 90s.

Gordon Neely- who worked at Ibrox during the Graeme Souness era- was axed following a complaint from a youngster who told his dad who was a serving police officer.

It's understood Neely was dismissed at a meeting involving Souness and his assistant Walter Smith.

Star-spotter Neely lasted three years at Rangers. Two years ago he died of cancer aged 62.

Rangers haven't been approached by Police Scotland regarding the allegation.

In a statement, the club said: "Rangers is now aware of an alleged incident involving an individual who worked very briefly for the club more than 25 years ago.

"It's understood the individual was dismissed immediately and that the police were informed.

"Rangers wishes to stress that all employees adhere to the strictest codes of conduct, especially when dealing with children and young people.

"Rangers have not been approached by Police Scotland or any authority regarding this allegation."

It comes as the number of clubs embroiled in the child sex abuse scandal reportedly climbed to 55.

Over the weekend Chelsea Football Club apologised "profusely" to former striker Gary Johnson over his treatment as a youth team player.

In a statement issued, Chelsea said it was clear Mr Johnson had "suffered unacceptably" and that it had "no desire to hide any historic abuse we uncover from view".

It said that it was told by Mr Johnson's solicitors in 2014 of other unnamed victims, including young boys, but said that it had been unable to identify anyone else.

The club said an external review would examine whether it should have carried out "a more detailed investigation" when the allegations first came to light and why it did not report them to the Football Association and Premier League.

Questions about how much the FA knew about issues of abuse, and when, mounted last night with reports claiming the organisation was warned on at least two occasions in prior decades about potentially inappropriate conduct towards young players.
