The Scottish Football Association (SFA) has apologised after thousands of fans were sent a spam email following an apparent database hack.

Fans subscribed to the SFA's Scotland Supporters Club mailing list received an email invoice for £170 this morning.

The email, which claimed to have been sent by the accounts department of the Scotland Supporters Club, included a payment link that was a disguised website address.

It advised fans that the 'outstanding' £170 had to be paid by December 7.

The SFA said the email was sent after a third-party email database was compromised and assured fans that no bank of creditcard details had been shared.

It urged anyone who received the invoice to delete the email and advised fans who had opened it to run a security and virus check on their computer.

A statement on the SFA website said: "We would like to apologise to those who have received a spam email this morning purporting to be from the Scottish FA.

"The email asks recipients to click a link where they can pay an outstanding bill.

"This has occurred due to a third-party email database being compromised.

"We urge all recipients to delete the email immediately and recommend that anyone who may have opened it run a security check on their computer to ensure no malware has been installed.

"We would like to assure all supporters that no bank or credit card details have been shared.

"We have moved to delete this account and the issue has been raised with our suppliers.

"We will provide an update in early course."

The Scotland Supporters Club currently has 29,231 members.
