This is the amazing moment a Greenock schoolboy solves the Rubik's Cube in a time only half a second outside the UK record.

As reported in our sister title the Greenock Telegraph, Andrew Stevens is a whizz on the 3-D combination puzzle in which users need to try and get all six faces of the cube covered in one of the six colours available.

Alexander Lau is currently the fastest 'speedcuber' in Britain with a time of 5.96 seconds.

Since 2003, The World Cube Association, the Rubik's Cube's international governing body, has organised competitions worldwide and kept the official world records.

The current world record for solving a Rubik's Cube was set by Mats Valk of the Netherlands in November this year with a time of 4.74 seconds at the Jawa Timur Open 2016 competition in Blitar, Indonesia.

The Rubik's Cube is widely considered to be the world's best-selling toys and reached its height of mainstream popularity in the 1980s.
