A KNIGHTSWOOD teen has landed a role in a festive pantomime set to be acted out before hundreds of theatre-goers on one of Scotland’s most famous ships.

Sean Langdon, who studies HND Acting and Performance at City of Glasgow College, has been cast as the dame in the college’s take on the classic Dick Whittington, which is set to be staged at The Tall Ship at Riverside in Glasgow.

The 19-year-old former Knightswood Secondary School pupil said he is looking forward to the experience of raising festive spirits among hundreds of theatre enthusiasts including school groups and members of the public.

Sean, who had his first experience of performing in a pantomime while in fifth year at school, told the Clydebank Post: “Though I’ve done a pantomime before, I’m really looking forward to this as Dick Whittington is such a classic.

“I’m playing the dame which will be fun – I really enjoy playing different types of characters as it’s good experience for me.”

The teen honed his acting skills while studying Advanced Higher Drama at his former school, before applying for the City of Glasgow College course and has assured audiences the event will be a treat for all the family. He added: “Those who come to see the pantomime can expect a great atmosphere and lots of improvisation.”

The rags-to-riches tale begins when poor orphan boy Whittington is taken in by wealthy Mr Fitzwarren, who organises an overseas trade expedition, sending cargo on a vessel upon which Whittington works as a servant.

Ultimately, fortune favours Whittington and his cat, and, having become richer than Fitzwarren himself, they return home aboard the good ship Glenlee – the name of the Port Glasgow-built three-masted ‘Tall Ship’ built in 1896 that will serve as the pantomime venue.

Anne Macleod, drama lecturer at City of Glasgow College and director of the production, said: “We are looking forward to staging Dick Whittington at The Tall Ship at Riverside later this month.

“I’ve been really impressed with Sean and his fellow students during rehearsals – they have all been incredibly motivated and imaginative.”

“The students will be performing three shows a day which is great preparation for them going to work in the industry.

“Many of our graduates get their first professional jobs working with children’s theatre groups and in pantomimes so this is great experience for them.

“Performing in a pantomime requires skill, focus and energy – actors who can successfully work a pantomime audience can manage anything.”

Public performances of City of Glasgow College’s production of Dick Whittington will take place at The Tall Ship at Riverside at 7pm from Tuesday, December 6-Thursday, December 8.
