A PRIMARY school repeatedly targeted by thugs has been set alight.

Fire crews tackled a blaze at Gowanbank Primary School, where vandals previously trashed the building before feasting on jelly and ice cream.

Glasgow City Council has tweeted that the school will be closed on Thursday.

Bosses said more information about the Nitshill school will be released shortly.

Evening Times readers donated generously to Gowanbank earlier this year after we revealed the school was constantly under attack from mindless vandals.

In one such vandalism spree, which devastated young pupils, the building was trashed before hooligans raided the school kitchen for a feast.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed four fire appliances were called to the scene shortly after 6.20pm.

The extent of the damage is currently not known.

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: "Gowanbank Primary School will be closed on Thursday after a fire tonight."

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 6.22pm to reports that a fire alarm had been activated within a school.

"When firefighters arrived at Gowanbank Primary School, Overtown Avenue in Glasgow, it was found that a fire had taken hold within the building.

"A total of four fire engines were deployed to the scene. 

"Firefighters wearing protective breathing apparatus entered the school to tackle the flames. The fire was extinguished at 7.03pm.

"The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service remains in attendance."
