A BANNED driver has been jailed after he gave cops another person’s name when they stopped him at the roadside in Glasgow.

Sergej Rinkevic, 26, admitted he attempted to pervert the course of justice and appeared in Glasgow Sheriff Court for sentencing.

Rinkevic, of Rosemont Street, Glasgow’s East End, told police officers he was someone else when they stopped the car on September 7 at Alexandra Parade.

They had spotted him driving in Glasgow city centre close to the Royal Infirmary and had cause to stop him.

He also admitted that he was driving without a valid licence and car insurance.

His defence agent told the court that his client was the sole carer for his mother.

He also explained his client drove the car on the day in question after he was convinced that he should take it for a food shop.

His defence agent added: “He has put himself in a difficult position.”

The sentencing sheriff told Rinkevic: “In this case, you quite deliberately avoided detection.”

Rinkevic was sentenced to four months in prison for attempting to pervert the course of justice.

This sentence was reduced from six months because of his early plea.

He was also banned from driving for 12 months and ordered to pay a fine of £400.

Rinkevic was taken straight into custody.
