WHAT tunes might form the soundtrack to the first ever Streets Ahead Disco Clean Up?

Something by 90s popsters Garbage perhaps? The Trash Can Sinatras were a definite. And surely Clean Bandit could be on the list?

Whatever the music, the volunteers partied in style as they litter-picked in the Govan area recently, supported by Glasgow City Council’s Environmental Task Force and Sunny Govan Radio.

Around 30 big-hearted residents, including pupils from Ibrox Primary School, took part in the clean up as the radio station played their requests throughout.

There was singing, dancing and plenty of laughs as the upbeat music spurred on volunteers who had joined the Task Force to spend an hour collecting rubbish dropped in their area.

Numerous bags of litter were collected from Elder Park, Govan Road and Drive Road as the teams busted some moves while doing their bit for the local environment.

Sunny Govan Radio presenter Steg G said: “We were delighted to encourage local people to get up, have a boogie and get cleaning to the beat.

“As a local project, we are always keen to encourage active citizenship, and this initiative is a great way to get people involved in their community and enjoy some great music at the same time.”

Councillor Frank McAveety, Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chairman of the Environmental Task Force, described the event as “fun and imaginative”.

He said: “The disco clean up sounds like it was great fun and a really imaginative way to motivate the music fans, young and older, who kindly donated their time to help the Task Force clean up their area.

“Well done to all involved – your efforts had a really positive impact on your community. And I hear your dancing wasn’t too shabby either….”
