A MAN is due to stand trial accused of mugging a pensioner in broad daylight in Maryhill.

Bernard Lynch, 41, was refused bail at Glasgow Sheriff Court and has been remanded in custody in connection with the incident which happened at around 9.30am on December 14.

He is accused of grabbing the 81-year-old victim’s bag and robbing her of a purse which contained money and other personal items at Gairband Avenue.

His charge sheet states that he allegedly struck the woman on the head and struggled violently with her.

Lynch, of Wyndford Road, Maryhill, is also accused of having drugs in his possession at his home address on the same day.

It is alleged that he had Class B cannabis and Class A cocaine in his possession at his home.

Lynch has plead not guilty and is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court again for an intermediate trial diet on January 5.

His trial will begin on January 11.

The Evening Times previously reported how brave members of the public intervened during the alleged incident.

The woman was left shaken but uninjured.

We also previously reported that the woman’s purse, which had no money, was later recovered.

The Greater Glasgow Community Investigation Unit launched a probe following the alleged attack.

The Evening Times reported on Monday that the unit operate out of Govan's Helen Street police station and are headed by Detective Inspector Alasdair Barlow.

Lynch was arrested and appeared in court this month.
