A two-year-old boy was among eight people taken to hospital following a two-vehicle road crash.
The collision involving a black Ford Fiesta and a grey Mitsubishi Lancer happened near Glenmavis, Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, at about 7.50pm on Thursday.
Both cars were extensively damaged and the occupants of both vehicles were taken to Monklands District Hospital, police said.
A 36-year-old man, who was a passenger in the Mitsubishi Lancer, suffered a serious head injury. Medical staff describe his condition as serious but stable.
The other occupants of the Mitsubishi car - a 33-year-old woman, a 13-year-old boy and a two-year-old boy - were also taken to hospital and were later released following treatment.
The occupants of the Ford Fiesta, two 17-year-old boys and two girls, aged 14 and 15, were taken to Monklands hospital for treatment. Their injuries were not considered serious.
Police Scotland appealed for information about the crash.
The Ford Fiesta was travelling south along the B803, Coatbridge Road, Glenmavis, while the Mitsubishi Lancer was travelling north when the collision happened.
The road was closed for several hours as crash scene investigators examined the site.
