SCHOOL janitors are to stage a two week strike as a row over pay continues.

Jannies working in Glasgow primary schools are planning to start the 14 days of action on Monday.

The staff, who are members of trade union Unison, are unhappy with the level of pay they are receiving from their employers Cordia, an arms-length Glasgow City Council firm.

Janitors argue other staff who carry out similar duties get paid more of they work in other areas of the council.

a council spokeswoman said: “We were aware that a 10 day strike is planned and advised our schools of this today.

“The council will continue to work with Cordia to ensure that our schools and nurseries will be open for business as usual.

“All Breakfast Clubs and After School Clubs operated as normal during the last periods of action.

“However, parents and carers need to be aware that this is subject to change at short notice depending of local arrangements and circumstances.”

Meanwhile, fellow Unison members working for Access, another arms-length council firm, started strike action on Thursday against the privatisation of the local authority’s IT services.

The council is considering whether to award the contract for its IT services to Canadian firm CGI Group, but says staff have been told their jobs will be guaranteed if the deal is made.

A council spokesman said: “The council has already met the union’s demands and staff have been given a written assurance that guarantees on jobs, terms and conditions and pensions will be met should the council decide to award a contract to CGI. These would be contractual guarantees that would go over and above TUPE regulations.”
