FOOTBALL legend Paul Gascoigne was the victim of an unprovoked attack, according to police.

Officers looking through CCTV footage of the incident believe that the ex-Rangers star was randomly set upon last month.

Gazza, aged 49, suffered from a fractured skill and required 11 stitches after being kicked down stairs at a London hotel.

The former England hero was treated at A&E for his injuries.

A source told the Mirror that officers are working alongside the team at the Ace Hotel to track down the attacker.

The insider said: “Police are treating the incident seriously. There is no doubt Paul was drunk at the time, but further investigation seems to indicate that the attack which left him in hospital was unprovoked.

“Paul is determined the person who hurt him is held responsible.”

After being discharged, he tweeted: “I’ve been2hospital. I’ve a fractured skull, I’ve 11 stitches in & on my eyelid plus my arm cut to bits where they threw me down the stairs.”

The star, whose battle with drugs and alcohol is well documented has spent two decades battling his addictions.

He admitted himself back into rehab for the tenth time this week and is expected to spend two weeks there.
