THE parents of Celtic superfan Jay Beatty have spoken out after vile comments were posted online about the youngster.

Several football fans posted derogatory comments about Down’s Syndrome on the Rangers media forum on a thread which discussed the Old Firm match at Ibrox which Celtic won 2-1.

A graphic was also created which made fun of both Jay, who has Down’s Syndrome, and model Katie Price’s son Harvey, who suffers from a rare genetic condition called Prader-Willi syndrome, as well as autism, ADHD and blindness.

Since the comments were posted, rival supporters have condemned the trolls attacking the 13-year-old.

The teenager's mother Aine has also thanked fans for their support.

She posted on Facebook: “He is just a little boy who really loves his football team.

“To the minority that mock him, you don’t know him. If you did know him you would never dream of mocking him.

“Thank you for all the messages and comments of support. We really appreciate it and together we won’t let the behaviour of others destroy a little bhoy’s dream.”

Jay’s dad, Martin, added: “Thank you to everyone for all your kind words we really appreciate it.”

Social media users were also quick to show their support to Jay and his parents.

Fiona Maguire said: "An inspirational boy with a big heart. Proud parents and a wonderful sister. The world could do with more Jay Beattys!"

Jenny Lockhart added: "Jay is one in a million, a very special wee man. Jay there is some bad people in the world, don't listen to them. Keep all your good work up."

Officers confirmed earlier this week that they were looking into the abuse.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “We can confirm we have received a complaint regarding social media comments about Jay Beatty. Inquires are ongoing.”

A statement on Rangers Media apologised for the slurs on Friday night.

It said: “We are disappointed that three of our members posted offensive material relating to Jay Beatty. We extend our apologies to him and his family.”
