GLASGOW city centre’s top cop has said there will be extra patrol by his officers in the ‘Four Corners’ area after a car was deliberately driven at a man following an argument.

Police rushed to the scene after the 32-year-old man was seriously injured when he was struck by a dark coloured Volkswagen Golf in Jamaica Street near to Midland Street at around 12.45am yesterday.

The victim was walking along the street with three male friends when he became involved in an altercation with another man.

That man then jumped into his car and drove the wrong way up Jamaica Street before he deliberately mowed down his victim.

Police immediately launched an attempted murder probe, and the area was sealed off for hours with commuters re-routed as they headed into the city centre.

Chief Inspector Brian Gibson, who is based at Stewart Street, praised the quick response from his officers in the aftermath of the attack and says their is no indication that the incident would be repeated.

He said: “We weren’t able to prevent that incident from happening but we did have officers nearby who were able to assist the injured party and secured all the witnesses that were in the area.

“This is a reflection of the resources committed to ensuring the city remains as safe as possible.”

He added: “We will ensure that officers give that area extra patrol. The public can be reassured that our officers are out there.”

Detective Inspector David MacGregor is in charge of finding the thug responsible for the attack.

He said: “The driver made off north on Jamaica Street, turned west under the Heilanman’s Umbrella, Argyle Street, and then possibly into Oswald Street, against the flow of traffic, onto the South Side.

“None of the man’s friends were injured but he sustained multiple injuries and is in a very serious condition in hospital.”

He explained that officers are carrying out enquiries with street, commercial and private CCTV being reviewed.

He added: “There were a number of people in Jamaica Street at the time of the incident, a number of whom have already come forward and indeed, who tried to assist the injured man until the ambulance arrived, however, we are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area and who has not been spoken to by police and would encourage them to come forward.

“The Volkswagen Golf made off at speed from the scene and I am sure that people would have seen it make off or driving through the streets, especially as it was going the wrong way down Jamaica Street and possibly Oswald Street.

“ Again, if you did see it, or have any information that will assist officers with their enquiries then please call Glasgow City Centre CID via 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where details can be given in confidence.”
