COLLEAGUES of a man who is on the critical list for a heart transplant have stripped off to drive home the message that Scotland needs more organ donors.

Staff at Mercedes-Benz in Glasgow bravely shed their suits to show their support for Michael Hanlon, a sales executive for the firm.

Michael has been waiting for a heart transplant since July last year at the Golden Jubilee Hospital in Clydebank.

The father-of-three was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in 2004, a condition which was passed on genetically.

After experiencing heart failure in 2007 and undergoing open heart surgery to have a metal valve fitted, an infection in 2014 caused Michael’s condition to worsen leading to him being listed for transplant.

The only cure for Michael’s condition is a transplant, however because of his blood group, he can only receive an O type heart, narrowing the field for him.

Currently 44 per cent of the population in Scotland is on the organ donor register.

The Scottish Government has launched a consultation about a possible shift to an opt-out transplant system to help drive up the number of organ donors. The Evening Times has led a five-year campaign calling for the change.

Michael said: "I would never have expected the guys at work to go to these lengths to help the cause, but it’s great that they’re backing such an important message.

"People who join the Register are heroes in my eyes, that one decision to sign up could ultimately save a life.

“As time goes on, the wait gets more difficult but I always try to stay positive.

" Every day is a day closer to getting fixed and I just have to set myself goals, stay focused.

"There’s no other option as I’ve too much to live for, like the hundreds of other people in Scotland waiting.  I’d urge anyone who supports organ donation to make today the day they join.”

Richard Helm, Used Car Sales Leader at Mercedes-Benz of Glasgow said:

“Michael is a huge part of our team at Mercedes-Benz and team members and customers alike are hoping that the call he desperately needs comes soon.
