ONE of Glasgow’s best-known pubs will close for six weeks to undergo a £250,000 renovation.

Starting next week, MacSorley’s Music Bar, which has been a city favourite for 114 years, will be refurbished.

The project will see the fixtures and fittings renewed, get a new sign and will see an outside drinking area built.

The changes come as establishment’s new publican, Mickey Mullan, takes over what is described as a city landmark.

Mullan said: “MacSorley’s is a Glasgow institution and I am looking forward to building even further on its reputation as a music and entertainment venue.

“We currently have live music four times a week and I want to extend that to every night of the week.”

The investment, in partnership with national pub company Punch, will focus heavily on the pub’s history and heritage, featuring bespoke artwork from Glasgow-based artists, Social Recluse.

Iain Thompson, the sales and recruitment development manager for Punch, said: “MacSorley’s is a landmark city pub and this investment will draw on its rich heritage to create a warm and welcoming environment that is truly connected to the city.

“Mickey is a great publican with a lot of experience and I look forward to working with him and his team to grow and develop the business.”

As well as bolstering the number of live music the pub’s new manager is also hoping to bring in new and emerging Glasgow talent.

Mickey Mullan added: “Encouraging new talent is really important to me and I see MacSorley’s as playing a major role in giving talented new bands and singers their first step on the ladder.”

The pub closes on on Wednesday for the work to begin and is set to re-open on February 24.

Last year it was feared the pub had closed its doors for good but later re-opened in June.
