PARENTS say their children’s education is suffering after nine teachers left one primary school in five months.

Five teachers, including a head teacher, have left Cadder Primary for new jobs since August, while four other teachers are on parental leave.

Parents have blasted Glasgow City Council for the delay in replacing the staff who have moved on, and insist their children’s education is not up to scratch due to the number of supply staff on duty.

One parent said her son’s primary one class have had five different teachers since the start of the year.

Last week parents received letters from the current head teacher acknowledging the concerns.

However the local authority say there is “no issue” with staffing at the school and educational standards are being maintained.

Parent Jennifer Masterson, from Maryhill, has two children at the school and said: “We’ve got no staff to replace these teachers, no permanent staff. There are stand-in teachers. My son started school in August and I asked him what teachers he had the other day and he said he didn’t know, he doesn’t know who he will have tomorrow.

“He’s had five already this year. My daughter’s primary six teacher just didn’t come back after December as well.

“The school is a good school and the head teacher who has now left was excellent, as are the teachers who are there and who were there.

“But this can’t go on.

“We got a letter from the head teacher whose there just now, saying they are aware of the staffing changes and that they would prefer to have a stable staff in place.”

Another parent, who did not want to be named, said: "Something needs to be done. It’s unacceptable and we don’t know how many teachers our kids will have by the end of the year.

“The school is a good school, we just want to make sure our kids receive a decent education.”

Parents have now set up a petition, which has gathered hundreds of signatures, calling for the council to take action to replace the former teachers.

Around 220 people have backed the online campaign, which was started last week.

Councillor John Letford, SNP councillor for the area, has been in touch with the parents and now plans to speak to the administration in an attempt to resolve the issue.

His colleague Billy McAllister, an independent Maryhill councillor, has also said he will help the parents with their fight.

A council spokeswoman said: “There is no staffing issue at Cadder Primary School.

“The headteacher has issued a parents’ letter this week to reassure parents of some staff changes due to maternity leaves and we are working with the headteacher to address the temporary supply cover for absence.

“This does not affect the school’s commitment and ability to deliver a quality education to pupils at Cadder Primary.”
