Police have offered their reassurances to a shocked community after a man was targeted by a gunman in a shooting outside a Glasgow school.

Officers will be patrolling the area surrounding St George’s Primary School on Muirdykes Road, Penilee following yesterday’s shooting which happened in front of terrified parents and children.

Residents said there was “screaming and panic” as gun fire was heard just after classes began.

Claire Walsh, 41, said: “My neighbour heard the shooting as the kids were going in to the school. There was a lot of screaming and panic.”  One local, who asked not to be named, added: “My neighbour also told me there had been a shooting.

“Everybody was upset and everybody is deeply concerned about what has happened, especially the elderly people.

“This is a nice, quiet area and we don’t get many incidents – something like this is very out of character.

“My relative has been living here for 10 years and nobody would ever have expected anything like this.”

A Glasgow City Council spokeswoman said there was no threat to staff or children at the school and the incident did not happen in the school.

She added that staff will work with police to assist their enquiries.

Local councillor Alistair Watson said: “Parents are worried about the safety of their children and the kids are the number one priority, to make sure they are safe.

“Penilee is a good area with lots of very good people here.

“I have to commend the police for their operation. They have been very on the ball with this incident.”

Detective Chief Inspector John Kennedy said: “This was a particularly distressing incident for the local community, given it took place close to a primary school.  “Although our investigation is at an early stage, we are carrying out a number of inquiries to establish the exact circumstances of the incident but I do  believe that this was a targeted attack focused on one intended victim.  “While forensic and ballistic examinations continue to take place at the scene, detectives are carrying out door to door inquiries in the area and reviewing CCTV.  “This is a highly-populated, residential area and I am appealing to anyone who may have seen the man with the buggy before or after the incident to come forward with any information.”
