A WOMAN has avoided jail time after failing to declare that she had thousands of pounds worth of savings while applying for benefits.

Olena Voloshyna, 41, had only a basic understand English when she applied for council tax benefits between 2010 and 2012.

During an automated phone call to claim the money, the 41-year-old from Grafton Place, failed to declare that she held savings of more than £16,000.

The single mum was later discovered to have £18,000 of savings in a separate bank account.

Appearing at the Glasgow Sheriff Court, Voloshyna’s defence agent stated that she had not understood the instructions while carrying out the application.

The defence agent stated that she had been keeping money in her account on behalf a friend with the rest due to be sent to her family in Ukraine.

She was given a deferred sentence for good behaviour.
