KENNY MILLER reckons Rangers can achieve both of their goals this term and lift the Scottish Cup as well as finishing second in the Premiership.

Mark Warburton’s side face Motherwell in a fourth round tie at Ibrox on Saturday as they return to action following the winter break.

Defeat to Celtic on Hogmanay left the Light Blues 19 points adrift in the top flight standings and securing a shot at the Europa League is the priority in the second half of the season.

Rangers came within minutes of Scottish Cup glory last term and Miller is determined to go one better this time out and finish the campaign with two reasons to be cheerful.

He said: “Listen, you can’t put that right until you get past the early rounds and get to the final.

“We were really disappointed last year and that still hurts. It hurts the manner in which we lost that game.

“We are definitely looking to improve on last season and that would mean winning it. But, to do that we need to get through the early rounds and make sure that we do learn from the things that we are talking about.

“Absolutely [we can finish second and win the Scottish Cup] and for me they are the goals, they are definitely the goals for us.

“We want to achieve second and if we can close that gap a little bit, which would be a real positive in the second half of the season. Obviously we want to get to the latter stages and lift that cup as well.”

Rangers warmed up for their showdown with the Steelmen against RB Leipzig on Sunday as they suffered a 4-0 defeat against the Bundesliga title hopefuls.

It was a tough afternoon at the office for Warburton and his players as the Gers were well beaten in the Red Bull Arena.

And Miller hopes Rangers can savour that winning feeling once again at Ibrox as they get back down to business this term.

He said: “The result [has to change]. We need to win.

“If you want to win the cup, which we do, then we have to get past Motherwell. I look back at the Celtic game and we were really disappointed.

“If you lose any Old Firm game you are disappointed and then we had to wait a couple of weeks to get back into action as well.

“We will get back on it, work hard in training and work on the things that we talk about and the things that we need to get better at. We have to learn from it and make sure we put in a performance and get the result on Saturday. There is no coming back if we lose that game because we are out the cup for another year.

“We want to move onto the latter stages and win this cup and do that we need to get past Motherwell.”

Boss Warburton was left frustrated with a poor performance from his side as Leipzig ran out comfortable winners at the weekend.

And Miller knows Rangers must put the friendly fixture to good use and learn from their mistakes going into the second half of the campaign.

He said: “It was a fantastic workout, a really tough, physical workout against a top team. Our mistakes were punished, which you expect against this level of team.

“They are looking to challenge for the Bundesliga this year and make the Champions League.

“But we have to look at it. Three of the goals, we have had the ball, we have had throw-ins in their final third and within eight to ten seconds the ball is in the back of our net. We have got to look at how that happened, how we can stop that happening again.”
