Details of how a man who was shot at as he took his daughter to school escaped serious injury have emerged.

An attempt was made on Ross Monaghan's life on Monday by a gunman who fired shots at him as he was walking away from St George’s Primary School in Hollybush Road at Muirdyke Road, Penilee just as classes were about to start.

Glasgow Times:

It is understood that Monaghan, 35, took himself to hospital for treatement and was released only a few hours later following the murder bid.

The Daily Record reports that Monaghan spotted the gunman aiming at him and ran away in a zig-zag motion to spoil his shot.

It is claimed a 9mm bullet was used which went straight through his body and the gun was fired twice.

Police Scotland have not revealed how many shots were fired.

A source told The Daily Record:  “Doctors judged that the entry and exit wounds were made by a 9mm bullet, which suggests that the gunman turned up with a firearm that would be expected to kill any target.

“It wasn’t any kind of air rifle, which some believed on account of Monaghan attending hospital for just a few hours.

“He was lucky he got a sense of the guy training the gun on him and took evasive action by running in a zig-zag.

“The hit came after Monaghan had dropped off his child and was walking back to his white van. He came face to face with the gunman and became aware of what was happening when he reached down to the buggy he was pushing to pull out the gun.

“Monaghan shouted, ‘You f****** p****’ and ran away and the hitman tried to get a clean shot at him. He almost got round the corner but he was hit.”

STV, however, say that Monaghan was wearing a bullet proof vest.

The Evening Times previously reported that detectives investigating the case believe the gunman may have been casing his target for days prior to the attack.

Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector John Kennedy said that their investigation into the attempt on Ross Monaghan’s life has so far revealed that the gunman may have been outside the school on Friday, January 13 with a buggy.

Police Scotland also confirmed that the gunman was pushing a four-wheel, collapsible-type buggy in a bid to blend in with other parents before he discharged the firearm at Monaghan’s back.

Now their enquiries have revealed that the gunman might have been seen by parents last Friday.

Enquiries also continue to locate the buggy which is described as being new, with four-wheels and collapsible. It also had a rain hood attached.

The Scottish Sun published an account from one dad who had spotted the gunman lurking by the school and, fearing he might try to snatch a child, filmed him minutes before the murder bid.

The gunman scampered in the confusion onto Hollybrush Road towards Langstile Road.

He was wearing a blue padded jacket, blue jeans, a dark woollen bobble hat and a woollen scarf pulled up around his face.

Police Scotland say they are treating the incident as attempted murder.

The attack is the second time a Glasgow school has been at the centre of a shooting.

In September 2015, Ross Sherlock was shot at several times outside St Helen’s Primary School in Bishopbriggs as he arrived to pick up his daughter.
