TRANSPORT cops have launched a probe after a fire on train line caused major disruption for commuters.

British Transport Police have said they are currently investigating an incident of wilful fireraising which caused significant damage to the railway close to Blackridge station, Scotland.

They were called to the scene before 10pm yesterday at the line adjacent to Bedlormie Drive following reports of a fire.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service also attended and the fire was quickly extinguished.

British Transport Police say as a result of the fire, the track and overhead power lines were significantly damaged and this has resulted in extensive delays and disruption on the mainline between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Scotrail announced disruption to lines from Glasgow via Airdrie and Edinburgh this morning.

Commuters were faced with delays until 10am.

Routes in Glasgow via Milngavie, Bathgate, Helensburgh, Dalmuir, Balloch, Larkhall, Airdrie and Edinburgh were all affected.

Replacement buses were currently being revised for those with pre-purchased tickets.

It is estimated the repairs will costs will run into the tens of thousands.

Detectives are appealing for any witnesses to get in touch.

Investigating officer DC Niall McGugan, said: “Although this fire was contained very quickly, the damage was extensive and the repair cost will be significant.

"Whilst we are still working to determine exactly what happened, at this time we are working to the presumption that this fire was started deliberately.

“I am very keen to speak with anyone who may have been in the area at this time or saw anyone acting suspiciously. Please get in touch as your information may help us investigate.”
