A CAR was set on fire in the driveway of a house in Clydebank in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Police said they were investigating the incident which occurred in Kirkwood Avenue shortly before 1am today.

No one was injured during the incident and the cost of the damage is still being worked out.

Police said they believed the suspect may have entered the area from the canal path close to Duntreath Avenue.

A spokesman said: "He approached the car before smashing the back window and setting the car on fire using an accelerant. Following the incident the suspect made off across the canal footbridge into the Whitecrook housing estate."

He is said to be a 6ft tall man and was wearing a dark hooded top and was carrying a light coloured carrier bag prior to the incident.

Detective Inspector Andy Doherty said: “This was a senseless act which caused a blaze which could have easily spread to the house. This reckless act will not be tolerated in our community. Our enquiries are underway to trace the person responsible and ensure they are held to account for their actions.

“I would appeal to local residents and any dog walkers who were on the canal path or within the Kirkwood Avenue and Whitecrook areas. You may have witnessed the fire, or perhaps seen someone acting suspiciously in the early hours of Thursday morning. Any information, no matter how small, will greatly assist our ongoing investigation."

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
