GLASGOW councillors approved to put forward £10million towards the construction of a new rail station and over 1,500 homes in the north east of Glasgow.

The funding support for the £19million development in the Robroyston and Millerston area was given the nod at the council’s executive committee yesterday.

At the meeting councillor George Redmond said building work on 405 homes had already begun with construction costs coming to £11,000 per house.

He also said that up to 750 new homes would be built on the south side of the M80 as part of the project.

It was also said that Scottish rail operator, Abellio, would be taking up the contract for the rail station.

The funding offered up by the council will add to the £9million already in place.

The new station is expected to open by the end of 2019 which will have two car parks and a drop-off facility.

Construction on the station is said to help accelerate the housing project.

“All opportunities will be taken to accelerate the completion of this much needed development,” said Redmond.

Before the project received unanimous approval across the board, just one concern was raised to do with the money being spent on parking.

It was asked that efforts be made to encourage people to cycle to the station as well as ensuring there would be parking stations for electric cars included in the plans.

The concern was taken on board and assurance was given to the committee that it would be taken on board.

Frank McAveety, the leader of the council, said: “We are delighted to provide this forward funding to allow the early delivery of this project and look forward to working with our partners through to its completion.”

Humza Yousaf, Scotland’s transport minister, recently welcomed the plans.

The station will be located on the Glasgow to Cumbernauld line.

As well as the council partners in this project include Transport Scotland, the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT),,Network Rail, Elmford Ltd, Park Lane and Stewart Milne Homes.
