THE BBC has come under fire for its coverage of Donald Trump inauguration's ceremony after misleading subtitles and a gaffe by a presenter.

A report of the proceedings in Washington were apparently overlaid with subtitles from a children's programme.

This left viewers staring at pictures of outgoing president Barack Obama, who was standing close to Mr Trump, with the caption: “Just shut it. yeah?

It was followed by the subtitles: “Oi! Leave him alone!”

There was a further unusual caption as his successor Mr Trump's face hove into view, with the words on subtitles saying: “Just tell him to get out of my face.

“So it was him in your room?”

The captions were apparenyty from CBBC show called The Dumping Ground about a group of youngsters who work to overcome daily challenges each day together.

The blunder was highlighted on Twitter by one user who uploaded a video of the erroneous subtitles which went viral.

The user, called Kayleigh, reportedly said: "I have absolutely no idea where they are from, the subtitles are usually pretty good so to see them over the complete wrong programme was pretty funny.”

A BBC journalist was also involved in another controversial incident as a camera panned to a shot of a door at the White House, waiting for the Obamas to emerge before the inauguration.

Katty Kay, the corporation's correspondent for BBC World North America, was heard telling viewers that a black woman who emerged from the door shortly beforehand was 'not Michelle Obama.'

Angela Marton tweeted: "BBC presenter said 'oh no that's not Michelle Obama' and black woman who was clearly not Michelle Obama comes through door. Cringe."

Social media users suggested that the correspondent did not need to point out she was not the outgoing first lady.
