THE sale of a football pitch in Baillieston has been prevented after local parents campaigned against it.

The pitch, next to Caledonia Primary School, was marked for development earlier this month.

Parents of local children were compelled to act to save the land as one of few places for sports and exercise in the area.

Councillor Marie Garrity announced on Friday that the situation has been “resolved”.

She said: “They will transfer the land to the Education department who will take on maintenance and upkeep.

"I am delighted with this outcome."

The decision marks a significant win for the Baillieston community.

Over 600 people have signed a petition to keep the land in recent weeks.

The site of the former sports pavilion is owned by City Property while part of the ground, which is no longer operational, is owned by Glasgow City Council.

Both sites were put on the market as a residential development opportunity.

Bailie Marie Garrity added: “When I was made aware of the for sale sign on the pitches I was outraged.

“This is a much needed outdoor facility not only for Caledonia school but also the community.

“As a health visitor, my concern was for the children who use this facility and the health benefits of outdoor play and sporting activities.

“I immediately entered into discussions with Education, Development and Regeneration Services and Planning Departments.

“Council Leader Frank McAveety and Executive Member of Education Bailie Liz Cameron were also informed.”

John Mason MSP previously stated the lack of facilities is already an issue for the area.

He said: “I was extremely heartened to hear that City Property have decided to halt plans to sell-off the pitches at Caledonia Primary School due to pressure from the local community.

“Frankly it does make you question why they thought it was a good idea to put the land up for sale in the first place.

“It is clear to me that the opposition of the local community and Councillor David Turner’s dogged pursuit of the issue has been key in City Property’s change of mind and is a good example of what people can achieve when they work together.”
