A STATE-of-the-art performance space has been officially opened at an old Cash and Carry.

Rockvilla, the National Theatre of Scotland’s new headquarters, was unveiled yesterday at Spiers Wharf.

The 40,000sq ft facility means for the first time the theatre company will be able to have all of its rehearsal and production activity in the one place.

Complete with three rehearsal spaces, the canal-side venue also houses a wardrobe facility, production and technical suite, office space, meeting rooms and social areas.

It was previously a Cash and Carry which has been refurbished over two levels.

The theatre company moved in to the building in November 2016 and have so far rehearsed their productions of Let The Right One In and The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart, before travelling to America to perform the shows.

Scotland’s culture secretary Fiona Hyslop, the theatre company’s chairwoman Dame Seona Reid and council leader Frank McAveety all attended the venue opening yesterday morning.

Ms Hyslop said: “Rockvilla will not only be a centre for creativity, production and talent development for the National Theatre of Scotland, it will be a hub of innovation for our wider Scottish theatre industry.

“This dedicated and inspiring space will enable this sector to continue to flourish and stand strong in their ambitions and I am delighted that the Scottish Government has been instrumental in helping the development.

“ I look forward to enjoying the success of this new initiative across Scotland’s stages, and around the world.”

Dame Seona Reid said the venue would act as a major resource for the “entire Scottish theatre sector” while Frank McAveety said he had “no doubt” the facility would “help inspire more outstanding work for the National Theatre of Scotland.”
