A TOP cop is hopeful witnesses to a botched gangland shooting at a Glasgow school will still come forward - even if they are afraid.

Detective Chief Inspector John Kennedy has urged anyone who may have saw the gunman who carried out the hit on Ross Monaghan over a week ago to speak out.

Monaghan, 35, was shot at close range by the gunman who approached him after he dropped his daughter off at St George's Primary School in Penilee on Monday, January 16.

The gunman, who was pushing a four-wheel, collapsible-type buggy in a bid to blend in with other parents, scampered in the confusion onto Hollybrush Road towards Langstile Road.

He was wearing a blue padded jacket, blue jeans, a dark woollen bobble hat and a woollen scarf pulled up around his face.

Detective Chief Inspector John Kennedy is particularly keen to establish the gunman's movements after the botched hit, and witnesses who saw anything should contact Police Scotland or Crimestoppers if they wish to remain anonymous.

DCI Kennedy said: "I am hoping that maybe one or two people who have been afraid to speak to anyone will now speak.

"I would ask them to phone Crimestoppers and anonymously give us the detail they require.

"Did they see the car leaving? Did they see the pram? Did they see the gunman get into the car with the buggy? Was there one or two or three or more people?

"Did they see a car racing away from the Penilee area just after 9am last Monday at speed. I would appeal to motorists going towards Crookston, Glasgow or Paisley, it could be anywhere."

Around 20 uniformed police officers and several plain clothed detectives took to the streets surrounding the school for the stop and interview operation on Monday.

Police Scotland have described the results of that operation as "productive" and confirmed that they are now following a number of lines of enquiry.

Around 100 motorists and 74 members of the public out on the street were stopped and questioned by investigating officers during the operation.

The Evening Times previously reported that DCI Kennedy has not ruled out the possibility that the gunman had an accomplice.

Officers are also currently pouring over hours of CCTV images in order to identify the direction the gunman travelled.

The probe into the attempted murder has taken the investigation as far as China as officers try to pin down the model of the buggy used.

Monaghan was cleared of the murder of Kevin 'Gerbil' Carroll in an Asda carpark in Robroyston in 2012.

He discharged himself from hospital following the attack before fleeing to Spain with his family last week.
