A woman killed in a hit-and-run crash has been named by police.

Joan Price, 59, from Troon, South Ayrshire, died at the scene of the head-on collision on the A77 near Holmston Roundabout, Ayr.

Two men in a black Volkswagen Golf fled the scene after the crash with a red Nissan Pulsar driven by Ms Price at around 9.35pm on Monday.

A number of motorists stopped to help and called emergency services, and a 39-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Nissan was taken to Ayr Hospital for treatment.

Police are continuing inquiries to trace the men in the Golf involved in the crash, and also the driver and passenger of a silver Audi A3 which was in the area at the time.

Before emergency services arrived, it is thought the men who had been in the Golf fled in the silver Audi.

Police said the Golf was so badly damaged in the crash that the occupants may have been injured.

Officers want to find out where the cars had been earlier and the manner in which they were driven.

Sergeant Kevin Blackley of Police Scotland said: "From witnesses, the two men in the VW Golf got out of the car and jumped into a silver Audi A3 that had been in the vicinity at the time of crash.

"The VW Golf was un-driveable and recovered at the scene. Due to the extent of the damage to the car, it is possible that either one, or both, of the occupants could have been injured by the impact of the crash.

"A number of people came to the aid of the two women in the car and called the emergency services, however we still would like to hear from anyone who was on the A77 around the time of the crash and who saw it happen.

"We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the cars - all three - prior to the crash and who can provide information about the way they were being driven at the time - this can be either on the A77 or on the nearby roads."

Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is asked to contact the Divisional Road Policing Unit at Irvine.

Police said a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
