Drivers attempted to reverse up a hard shoulder being used by emergency vehicles dealing with a two crash on the M80 in North Lanarkshire.
The dual carriageway was blocked for an hour after the accident near Cumbernauld which resulted in an Audi heading northbound crashing into the central reservation crash barrier.
Although one man was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary police say those involved managed to escape without serious injuries.
Five fire engines and three ambulances joined police cars in rushing to the scene at around 11.30am.
But two drivers were seen trying to escape the queue caused by the crash by reversing up the hard shoulder towards the Hornshill junction slip road.
One Renault car driver that tried the manouvre was forced to try and get back onto the M80 to get out of the way of a fire engine that was speeding to the scene.
Another car was later spotted succeeding the same manouvre, reversing and managing to reverse up the slip road to the shock of waiting drivers and as police and ambulances continued to use the hard shoulder to help deal with the crash.
The road partially reopened at around 12.45pm but one lane remained closed to allow for recovery work.
