FANS of hit television show Outlander will need to wait a little longer for “Droughtlander” to be over and the third series to air.

Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Prime Video have announced that the TV drama won’t return to our screens until September.

The forthcoming season will include 13 episodes based upon Voyager, the third of eight books in Diana Gabaldon’s international bestselling series.

Production began in Scotland last September and in recent months the cast and crew have been spotted filming on location across the country including at Edinburgh’s Royal Mile and the Ayrshire village of Dunure.

In March, Outlander move its home base from Scotland to Cape Town in South Africa to shoot sea voyage scenes on the former sets of US adventure drama series Black Sails.

In a clip released by the show’s makers, Outlander stars Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe - who play Jamie and Claire Fraser - bid a fond goodbye to Scotland as production moves to South Africa.

“We are going to Cape Town and we are extremely excited,” said Heughan. “There is sunshine and we don’t know what that is.”

“We would like to say thank you to the people of Scotland, all the heritage sites that have welcomed us, and to our amazing crew because without them nothing would get done,” said Balfe.

Although Balfe did add: “We will be back. So it is just bye for now.”
