A CARNTYNE man who attacked police, causing one to take two weeks off work, has been handed community service.

Samuel Cairns, 44, of Inverleith Street, appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court after pleading guilty to shouting, swearing and uttering threats of violence and attacking police.

Cairns was found lying in a common close in Shettleston Road on December 30, 2016, by officers.

Police approached the accused, who appeared to be unconscious, alerting him their presence and asking him to get up.

After he failed to respond, one officer performed a test for consciousness by pinching his earlobe.

Cairns then responded with threats including “f*** off” and “I’ll rip your f***** face off” and attempted to kick an officer in the groin.

He continued his tirade of abuse by attempting to bite him and assaulting another by kicking him on the body after he was handcuffed.

Following the incident, both Cairns and the attending police officer were treated at a local hospital.

The officer suffered soft tissue damage to his wrist, causing him to wear a splint and take two weeks off of work.

The sheriff ordered Cairns to undergo 110 hours of community service within 12 months as an alternative to custody.

He will also undergo a 15-month supervision order.
