A GANG of road rage thugs attacked a motorist after his car stalled several times - and one of the men even hit his victim with a spanner.

David Stephen, 21, was in the dock for sentencing at Glasgow Sheriff Court for his part in the attack which happened at Village Road, Cumbernauld on May 31, 2015.

Stephen plead guilty to assaulting the man while acting with another. He also accepted that he did threaten and punch the man.

The charge also states that the victim was struck on the head with a spanner to his injury - and the court heard that another man was responsible for that part of the assault.

The Procurator Fiscal depute told the court that the victim had approached the give way at a junction at Beech Crescent in Cambuslang and stalled his car.

The court heard that the victim went to drive away and stalled two more times before both cars pulled over onto the side of the road.

Stephen then jumped out of his car with two other men and approached the victim to punch him to the head through the vehicle’s window.

The other two men then began to shout and one of them struck the man with the spanner which left him with a minor cut to the bridge of his nose and right temple.

Stephen’s defence agent said: “The complainer pulled out at a junction and stalled the car.

“The car he was driving had mechanical problems at that time. It’s not clear he should have been driving.

“When he initially pulled out, the accused sounded his horn.

“The complainer went to drive away and stalled again.”

Stephen defence agent then explained that the car went forward and stalled once again.

His defence agent added: “The accused took the view that he was doing it deliberately.”

Stephen, of Brownsdale Road, Rutherglen, avoided jail and will have to compete 180 hours of unpaid work in the community within six months.

Stephen will also pay his victim £400 in compensation.
