Four popular Shettleston shops have been boarded up after being destroyed in a late night fire.

The shops on Shettleston Road were 'well alight' by the time firefighters were called out to the scene at 11.35pm on Wednesday night.

It is thought that the fire started at recently opened takeaway Sizzle & Spice 2 before spreading to East End News, Marmaris Turkish Barbers and Eastbank Glass.

The newsagents and takeaway bore the brunt of the blaze with their roof and windows both burnt out.

Mary Pavone, owner of East End News, received the call to say her business was on fire just before midnight.

She remained outside the shop in tears until three o’clock on Thursday morning before returning in the afternoon to assess the damage.

She described the experience of watching her shop of three years burn down as “traumatic”.

Mary added: “It’s really, really sad.

“The block of shops have been here for years and are popular with the locals.

“I have no idea what happened, I just got called out last night. All of the shops were shut at the time.

“I was here until 3am, we’re not sure what’s going to happen now or if we’ll be able to reopen.

“I have no reason to think anyone would’ve done it on purpose, I think it’s just been an accident.”

One local resident, who didn’t want to be named, said that the whole incident happened “really quickly”.

She said: “I just looked out my window about 11.30pm and the whole thing was up in flames.

“Most of the flames were coming from the takeaway. It’s not even here that long - it’s recently changed hands.”

The owner of Marmaris Turkish Barbers commented that he had “no idea” what happened.

Shettleston Road was closed to all traffic between Old Shettleston Road and Fenella Street but has since reopened.

A Police spokeswoman commented: "There were no reports of casualties."

The extent of damage to the properties are unknown.

Enquiries are ongoing.
