GLASGOW’S health board has apologised to an MSP after he was accused of caring more about a McDonald’s closing than a children’s ward.

Labour’s Neil Bibby publicly criticised Paisley SNP MSP George Adam for apparently failing to responded to the public consultation on plans to shut ward 15 of the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.

He said Mr Adam had “failed to lift a finger” to save the ward after criticising the closure of a McDonald’s restaurant in his area.

However the MSP had sent two submissions to the board. NHSGGC said a “breakdown” in its administrative process meant that his response was not added to the official document which was laid before board members earlier this week.

The board formally agreed plans to shut the inpatient ward on Tuesday and transfer services to the Royal Hospital for Children.

Mr Adams raised concerns about transport and capacity in his response.

He said: "We must remember that what we are talking about is the treatment of ill children. Using this to attempt political point scoring is an absolute disgrace and anyone that has taken part in spreading this misinformation must take a long hard look at themselves.

"I will continue to stand up for the people of my town."

Mr Bibby said: "SNP politicians like George Adam falsely denied there was a threat to the RAH Children's Ward before the election and to date despite having had months to do so he has still failed to publicly speak out against the downgrade at his local hospital."

A spokeswoman for NHSGGC said: “It was identified that Mr Adam had indeed written to us in January but regrettably there was a breakdown in our administrative process which should have replied to his letter and included it in the report to the Board on Tuesday.

“We have now written to Mr Adam this afternoon apologising for this administrative oversight.”
