Feline lovers will be purring with delight to learn that Glasgow is set to become home to its first-ever cat café.

The Purrple Cat Café will be opening its doors in the city centre in the summer to welcome moggy-lovers to kick back and relax with a group of cats which will be living in the building.

Keen kitten fans have already swamped a poll opened by the café with suggestions on what to call the cat that will feature in the business’ logo. So far, Wee G - or Weegie - and Clyde are among the most popular.

As well as this, the team has been inundated with applications from eager Glaswegians keen to work in the unique establishment.

The café took to Facebook yesterday to remind people: “We’ve received so many CVs and emails that it would be almost impossible to reply to each one properly.

“Once recruitment begins, we’ll send a notification to our mailing list, so make sure you’ve signed up (and confirmed your email address) if you want to be notified.”

The café’s website has described the need for such a place, and said: “Not for all the tea in China, could we even resist launching a café celebrating our huge love of cats, and a nice, fresh brew!

“You’ll also be able to enjoy plenty of other drinks, plus tasty food, including vegetarian
and vegan.

“Purrple Cat Café is opening its doors in July 2017, as the ultimate place to meet and relax with (feline) friends.”

The team also explained: “The café is our cats’ home. They’re free to roam the place, just as they would in a house.

“We have staff staying with the cats at night. There are also CCTV cameras for remote monitoring at all times.

“At some point in the future, we hope to broadcast a live stream on the website so you can keep up with what the cats are doing through the night.”

The world’s very first cat café opened its doors in Taiwan in 1998. Since then, the popular trend has swept across the world’s cities, finally now reaching Scotland’s largest city.

Edinburgh already got its own in January 2015 in the form of Maison de Moggy in the capital’s Old Town area.
