A Scots mum has made the brave decision to release a heart-wrenching image of the moment one of her twin boys held his baby brother’s hand as he lay motionless in an incubator following a sudden illness.

Kerrie Keen, 36, from Clackmannan, welcomed her sons Cooper and Lucas following an emergency C-section in April 2013.

However, just hours after the birth, Cooper suffered seizures and his oxygen levels dipped, resulting in multiple brain bleeds and in the newborn having to spend five weeks in ICU in Glasgow’s Royal Hospital for Sick Children.

When Lucas too fell ill, he was admitted to a hospital in Larbert near Falkirk which saw the mum having to travel between both areas for days to see each son.

However, Lucas recovered quickly and was able to accompany Kerrie to Glasgow to see his brother.

Kerrie explained to the MailOnline: “They used to set up a little cot next to Cooper’s incubator and they’d have there for him to lie. I thought it was important.

“We used to put Lucas into the incubator with Cooper and they’d hold hands - we have pictures of the whole family around the incubator.”

Now, with both sons, 3, at home, Kerrie said Cooper has hydrocephalus and has a VP shunt in his brain to drain fluid and relieve pressure.

He has also been diagnosed with cerebral palsy and is unable to sit unaided, crawl, or walk. He relies on his family to move him around and spend time with him on the floor playing with him and his brother.

The mum - who hopes Cooper will be able to have some independence and be able to move around on his own - is now appealing to generous members of the public to help her in her fundraising efforts as she seeks to adapt Cooper’s home for him by setting up a GoFundMe page.

On the page, Kerrie explained: “We previously did a little fundraising to be able to provide specialised walking aids for Cooper.

“We are now in a position where Cooper is becoming heavy to carry up and downstairs and we desperately need our family home adapted to suit Cooper’s disabilities and his needs.”

So far, the mum has managed to raise close to £2,500, although the target is £20,000.

She continued: “What we need is to be able to build a bedroom downstairs and to also widen doorways to ensure Cooper has access with his wheelchair.

“Also, to give Cooper full access to our garden would be fantastic. He’s such a loving and fun loving boy, so we want to be able to provide a happy home for him.”
