Fans hoping to meet former Doctor Who legend Peter Davison have been left disappointed after the star cancelled an upcoming appearance at a Glasgow book festival.

The Aye Write! festival, which takes place at the Mitchell Library, features more than 100 authors, thinkers, writers and journalists.

On Monday afternoon, fans that had bought tickets for the Fifth Doctor's festival talk were emailed by event organisers informing them his scheduled appearance was cancelled.

The 65-year-old acror succeeded Tom Baker as the Doctor in 1982 and travelled across intergalactic timelines in the Tardis until 1984.

Famous for wearing a cricket jumper, long coat, stripey trousers and matching hat, Davison was, at the time, the youngest actor to have played the lead role, a record he retained for nearly thirty years until Matt Smith - the Eleventh Doctor - took over in 2009.

Many fans took to social media sharing the disappointing news.

Stuart Mitchell from Aberdeen tweeted how this was third time the Time Lord had cancelled a scheduled appearance he planned to attend.

More than 200 authors, writers and celebrities, including Ian Rankin, the Makar Jackie Kay, Val McDermid and many more, will be attending the annual book festival this year.

The Aye Write! Festival is on from March 9 - 19.
