A CELTIC fan group has donated almost £2,000 to Alzheimer Scotland in honour of Lisbon Lions legend Billy McNeill, whose family revealed this week he has dementia.

The Green Brigade released a statement on social media saying that they had donated £1,967 to the charity.

The money was raised after the Green Brigade called on the Celtic support to donate to a Go Fund Me page.

The fundraising page was set up to allow the group to buy a one-off tifo display to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Lisbon Lions winning the European Cup.

Mr McNeill, who has been described as the club's "greatest ever captain", led the team which won the European Cup in 1967 in Lisbon.

The former Hoops captain enjoyed a glittering career at the Parkhead club, where he became the first Briton to lift the European Cup after a 2-1 win over Inter Milan.

His wife Liz revealed this week he was diagnosed with the illness seven years ago and is now unable to speak.

She told how she and her husband of 53 years are living day by day.

She said: "It is sad. We don't know what he can remember because he can't communicate."

In a statement, The Green Brigade said: "Billy McNeill led the Lisbon Lions to footballing dominance and immortality in 1967, and today we donate £1,967 to Alzheimer Scotland in his honour and on behalf of those who have contributed to our appeal."

McNeill, 76, also led Celtic to nine successive league titles and won seven Scottish Cups and six League Cups, before having two spells as manager.

He is currently being cared for by Liz, 73, at his home in Newton Mearns, Glasgow.

Meanwhile, The Green Brigade have reached their fundraising goal of £15,000 to have a full stadium display on the day Brendan Rodgers’ side are expected to be presented with the Premiership trophy at Celtic Park.

The group confirmed that they raised £12,864 through the Go Fund Me page.

A bucket collection was also held around the stadium during Saturday's game against Hamilton Accies raised £9,141.82.

This pushed the total raised to £22,005.82 and the Green Brigade said the money will go towards other tifos to commemorate the victory including one at the Scottish Cup final.

A spokesman said: "The Green Brigade would like to offer a massive thank you to the entire Celtic support for this overwhelming response to our Lisbon50tifo fundraising campaign."
